A Literary Party at Joshua Reynolds, 1851. "A Literary Party at Sir Joshua Reynolds's" engraved by D. Goerge Thompson after a painting by James E. Doyle, published by Owen Bailey, Mornington Crescent, London, 1851. Large steel engraved print on India paper, laid down on thick paper (as published.) Very slight spotting in image area and extremely slight soiling in margins, upper corners trimmed to follow image shape. Size 56 x 45 cms including inscription, paper size 63 x 50.5 cms. (Please note the full image is from a digital camera and is of lower quality than my scanned images.) Ref E456
Gloucester, Comical Procession from Glos to Berkeley, 1826. "The Comical Procession from Gloucester to Berkeley" drawn and engraved by Robert Cruickshank, published by Sherwood Jones & Co. in The English Spy, dated 1826. Fine aquatint with original hand colour. Slight soiling in the margins, otherwise good condition with wide margins. Size 18.5 x 9.5 cms. Ref E454
James McKean at the Bar, Kays Portraits, 1795/1835. "James McKean at the Bar Edinr." (at the High Court of Justiciary charged with Murder), dated 1795. 'This is understood to be a striking likeness of the prisoner, as he appeared at his trial-placed between two of the Old Town Guard-for the murder of Buchanan the Lanark carrier.' Copper etched print published in Kay's Edinburgh Portraits, 1837-8. Size 16 x 10.5 cms plus margins. Ref E402
Jerome William Knapp (legal), Kays Portraits, 1800/1835. [ JEROME WILLIAM KNAPP, LTD., DEPUTY-CLERK OF ARRAIGNS. ] (legal) undated, about 1800. Mr. Knapp was an English barrister of the Middle Temple, and succeeded his father as Deputy-Clerk of Arraigns on the home circuit, which office he filled with much ability for a period of nearly thirty years. He came to Edinburgh in 1794, as Clerk of Arraigns to the Commission of Oyer and Terminer for the trial of Watt and Downie, accused of high treason-the former of whom suffered capital punishment. Lord Polkemmet (lawyer), Kays Portraits, 1799/1835. [ LORD POLKEMMET ] (lawyer) dated 1799. WILLIAM BAILLIE of Polkemmet, descended from an ancient family of Linlithgowshire, was the eldest son of Thomas Baillie, W.S. He was educated for the bar, and passed advocate in l 758. He acted as Sheriff-Depute of the before-mentioned county for above twenty years; and in 1792 was promoted to the bench. Copper etched print published in Kay's Edinburgh Portraits, 1837-8. Francis Jeffery, Advocate, Kays Portraits, 1816/1835. [ FRANCIS JEFFREY, ESQ., ADVOCATE ] ONE OF THE SENATORS OF THE COLLEGE OF JUSTICE. Dated 1816. This distinguished individual, son of Mr. George Jeffrey, a Depute-Clerk of Session, was born in Windmill Street, or Charles Street, near George Square, on the 23d of October 1773. His early years were marked by vivacity and quickness of apprehension; and his progress at the High School was rapid and decided. After studying for several years, from 1788, at the University of Glasgow, he repaired to Queen's College, Oxford, and there passed the greater portion of 1792-3. Sir William Miller, Kays Portraits, 1799/1835. [ SIR WILLIAM MILLER OF GLENLEE, BART. ] one of the Senators of the College of Justice. Dated 1799. THIS venerable Judge is the only son of Sir Thomas Miller, Bart., Lord President of the Court of Session, who died at his seat of Barskimming, in Ayrshire, in 1789. SIR WILLIAM was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1777. At the keenly contested election in 1780, he was returned M.P. for the city of Edinburgh, in opposition to Sir Laurence Dundas, and took his seat in Parliament; but he was unseated upon a petition, and his opponent declared duly elected. Sergeant William Duff, Kays Portraits, 1792/1835. [ SERGEANT WILLIAM DUFF, OF THE 42D REGIMENT, OR ROYAL HIGHLANDERS ] The 42d Regiment, or, as it is commonly called in Scotland, the "Forty-Twa," was originally formed about the year 1729, and obtained the name of the "Black Watch," from the nature of the duty, and the appearance of the soldiers, whose Celtic dress was of a more sombre description than the showy scarlet uniform of the regular troops. Paul Emperor of Russia, Kays Portraits, 1804/1835. "The Late Emperor Paul" of Russia, dated 1804. Kay states that this likeness of Paul I is from an original drawing by a Russian gentleman, who was banished to Siberia for thus having ventured to portray the ugly features of the Imperial Autocrat. Reginald Pole, Cardinal, printed for Richard Chiswell, c1685. "Effigies Reginaldi Poli Cardinalis" (Reginald Pole 1500 - 1558, Archbishop of Canterbury) engraved by R.White, published by Richard Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St.Pauls Churchyard, about 1685. Copper engraved print, partial plate mark, margins of just under 1 cm. Size 15 x 23.5 cms. Ref E364

The Divine and the Donkey, by C.Williams, 1814. "The Divine and the Donkey - or Petworth Frolicks" by C.Williams, published by W.N.Jones in The Scourge VII, 1814. Shows a practical joke played on a parson at Petworth, Lord Egremont's country house, with the Prince Regent involved. Copper etched print with original hand colouring. Trimmed within 1 cm of image edge all around, several vertical folds as published. Size 51 x 20 cms including inscription. Ref E284
