[ SERGEANT WILLIAM DUFF, OF THE 42D REGIMENT, OR ROYAL HIGHLANDERS ] The 42d Regiment, or, as it is commonly called in Scotland, the "Forty-Twa," was originally formed about the year 1729, and obtained the name of the "Black Watch," from the nature of the duty, and the appearance of the soldiers, whose Celtic dress was of a more sombre description than the showy scarlet uniform of the regular troops. Copper etched print published in Kay's Edinburgh Portraits, 1837-8. Size 13 x 20.5 cms plus margins. Ref E392
